Profesor Doug Munoz je přední světový odborník v oblasti fyziologie očních pohybů a jejich využití k porozumění patofyziologie neurologických a psychiatrických onemocnění.

Blinking and winking are cognitively-linked behaviours which differ by sex, age, and across clinical groups.

Abstrakt:

Spontaneous blinking has been linked to higher-level mechanisms such as attention, cognitive control, and social communication, as it integrates both bottom-up sensory signals and top-down conscious goals to prioritize efficient information gathering. Here, we will discuss how blink behaviour is timed strategically during cognitive tasks in order to maximize performance and minimize the loss of relevantvisual input. Our data from 750 healthy individuals (aged 5-95 years) has revealed important sex and age differences in this process. We have also compared these blink responses to various clinical cohorts to understand disease-related alterations in relevant circuitry. Finally, we will share new EMG data comparing blinking with winking, a behaviour that is rarely studied, which we believe is controlled by a unique oculomotorprogram involving high-level cortical mechanisms.
